How to avoid in-grown hairs

We are regularly asked about how to cope with in-grown hairs. We highly recommend exfoliating the skin, which removes dead skin cells from the skin's surface. It is important to remove these dead skin cells in order to prevent bacteria, sweat and dirt from getting stuck underneath the skin’s surface.

Regularly exfoliating is key to preventing and treating body acne, as well as inflamed pores. It can be beneficial for removing dry or dull skin as it increases blood circulation and brightens your skin to improve its appearance. It is important to be gentle with your skin and use small, circular motions when using your fingers or an exfoliating tool of your choice.

Your skin type should determine how often you exfoliate but it’s generally safe to exfoliate 2-3 times a week or every other day. If your skin is dry and sensitive, you may want to exfoliate only once a week. If you have a skin condition, or if you’re unsure how often you should exfoliate your skin, talk to a dermatologist.

Creating a regular exfoliation habit helps to:

1. Unclog pores and prevent acne
Usually caused by the combination of moisture and friction, body acne occurs when there’s friction between the skin and the fabric you’re wearing. This is exacerbated in hot or moist climates as the lining of your skin’s pores are broken down. The top layer of skin dies, while sweat and bacteria trapped on the skin’s surface, or in your fabric, over-hydrates the pores. This results in inflamed follicles due to dead skin cells and the production of excess sebum. Exfoliating will remove these dead cells and lessen the frequency of body acne.

2. Improve absorption of moisturisers and serums
Dead cells sitting on the surface of the skin can block oils and moisturisers from properly penetrating into the skin. This can lead to a lack of hydration which results in a build-up of dead skin cells. By exfoliating your skin and shedding away dead cells, you're helping the moisturiser penetrate more deeply so your skin can stay properly hydrated.

3. Boost circulation and lymphatic drainage
Exfoliating helps to stimulate better blood circulation which gives the face a more radiant and healthy glow. This can also improve lymphatic drainage which helps to remove toxins from the skin.

4. Prevent ingrown hairs
It’s important to gently exfoliate before shaving as removing the dead skin cells that could clog pores helps to lift the hairs away from the skin allowing the razor to cut closer.

5. Improve texture
Dead skin cells build up on the skin’s surface over time as new skin cells develop underneath. As those dead cells sit on your skin’s surface, they trap the new cells underneath, which can cause clogged pores and uneven texture. Exfoliating is a great way to cut down on congestion in the skin, while also leaving your skin feeling smoother and softer. It usually takes 27-30 days before new skin cells reach the top layers of the skin. Using an exfoliator regularly will help make your skin more vibrant and youthful.

6. Improve self-tanning benefits
People are using self-tanners instead of increasing risk of skin cancer due to the exposure and damaging effects of too much sun. To achieve a “realistic” look using a self-tanner its important to exfoliate with a gentle body scrub. Not removing the dead skin cells runs the risk of ending up with a blotchy look. Applying after exfoliating helps to smooth skin allowing for an instant and uniform application with a longer wear

Some body scrubs contain harmful chemicals and use plastic beads as the exfoliating agent. A natural body scrub such as Polish, Moist and Protect from the Like It On Top range aren’t harmful to your skin and are eco-friendly. To give your body a simultaneous boost our natural scrubs contain no chemicals and all have a moisturising component.

Our Polish (body scrub protection) contains turmeric & cane sugar, which is ideal for sensitive skin as sugar scrubs are less abrasive than salt and won’t burn if you have cuts. These also work great for exfoliating sensitive areas. Glycolic acid occurs naturally in sugar and is helpful for cleansing the skin and dissolving dead skin cells. As it’s a humectant it will not strip your skin of its precious natural oils.

Our salt scrub Moist (body scrub protection) contains avocado & agave is well-suited for rough skin that could benefit from deep exfoliation e.g. feet. It also has detoxifying benefits as it can extract toxins from the body and ease inflammation.

Our Dirty (body scrub protection) contains coffee & cocoa, which is a popular ingredient for many body scrubs. The tiny granules are gentle on the skin, while still being effective at removing dead cells from the skin’s surface. They can also help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks while giving you a radiant glow.
