Caring for skin during the Winter

As temperatures drop so do the moisture levels in your skin. The winter weather conditions can take a toll on your face and body therefore, it’s important to show your skin some TLC to keep it protected all season.

Cold temperatures and harsh winds can cause skin to dry out and lose its natural, healthy-looking glow. In addition to the winter weather, central heating can cause the air to dry out, which as a result, can cause your skin to dehydrate.

Less sunlight during the darker winter months can also strip your skin of nutrients, which can cause skin to look dull and uneven. When skin is dry, it can begin to feel rough, tight and itchy and can even start to redden and become more sensitive.

Dry skin can develop on any part of the body and is especially common on the face during winter because it is more exposed to the weather. When your skin begins to lose its moisture and become dehydrated, it means it’s lacking the water levels needed to function effectively. In addition to losing its softness and radiance, dry and irritated skin in extreme weather conditions can develop into a skin condition known as ‘winter rash’.

It’s important to find the perfect winter skincare routine to suit your skin needs as it’s your body’s first line of defence against the elements and environment. This means mixing up your routine and finding gentle formulas that won’t strip away your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Follow our winter skincare routine and top winter skincare tips below.

If your skin feels tight after cleansing during the colder months it means that you're stripping away your skins natural oils. Your skin will supplement the loss with extra sebum production resulting in oiler skin. Foaming cleansers can be a lot harsher therefore you should try using an oil based cleaner and rinse away with cold water. We recommend Filth (dirt cleansing protection), which is enriched with organic jojoba oil and organic grapeseed oil to gently remove makeup and dirt whilst protecting your skin against blackheads and whiteheads.

Layering is important as your products should be applied in a particular order. Your moisturiser, and lighter, water containing serums should go on first and follow with with a facial oil which will act as a barrier, allowing the moisture to be kept in the skin's layers rather than pulled by the outside air. We recommend our holy grail Sustain (oil cleansing protection) to maintain the skin's hydration and give the skin a radiant and healthy glow.

Your lips also need TLC in the colder months as the skin on our lips is super thin and prone to dry out quickly. We recommend using Juicy (lip scrub protection) to exfoliate the skin on your lips, followed by Drip (lip balm protection). Drip has a natural blend of organic carrot carrot seed, organic coconut oil leaves lips feeling soft and replenished. Lip scrubs are also a necessity as they remove dry and flaky skin and help you get the most of out your lip balm. Like It On Top offers two lip scrub flavours: lemongrass and pink grapefruit for your winter needs.

Your body also needs moisture and protection during the winter. The drying effects of central heating and being trapped under the weight of all those heavy winter clothes means skin needs to be gently exfoliated weekly and hydrated daily to keep it looking and feeling smooth. To ensure you’re not causing surface damage that results in excess sebum production you should aim to exfoliate 1-2 times a week.

Leave your body feeling softer and smoother with our range of exfoliating body scrubs: Polish (turmeric & cane sugar), Dirty (coffee & cocoa) and Moist (avocado & agave). Gently buffing away dead skin cells allows your moisturisers to work and sink into skin more effectively. We recommend our face scrub protection, Grind (face scrub protection), to exfoliate, brighten and hydrate. Weekly exfoliation helps to reveal the brighter, smoother, healthier looking skin underneath and leaves it feeling silky soft.

To keep skin moisturised and protected from head-to-toe, we recommend Protect (multipurpose body protection). This multipurpose body protection will help to care for dry skin and cracked heels as well as counter any hyperpigmentation concerns.

Winter Skin Care

1. Drink water - as always, remember to drink water as hydration of the body is so important for hydration of the skin

2. SPF - make sure you include this in your skincare routine even if you're not poolside as your skin is still exposed to the sneaky winter sun, which can be just as strong.

3. Skincare - do your skincare! We recommend using our 4-Step Kit twice per day (morning and night) to keep skin balanced and hydrated!
