What is skin purging?

It can be daunting starting a new skincare routine, especially if you have not previously used any skin care products or previously used products from other brands that might have caused a negative reaction.

Like It On Top was created by two sisters that struggled with breakouts and dark marks. They wanted a natural, gentle solution for their skin without having to compromise on other important factors such as vegan and organic ingredients. So Like It On Top was born! Tried and tested by the brand’s founders, the 4-Step Kit has become a global bestseller, offering a twice daily skincare routine for clear, hydrated skin.

The products contain key ingredients designed to speed up cell renewal, which often causes the skin to purge as part of the process.

What is skin purging?

Skin purging is defined as a reaction to an active ingredient that is increasing skin cell turnover rate. In other words, as skin cell turnover speeds up, the skin starts to shed dead skin cells faster than normal. Skin purging is completely normal for some people as part of the initial purging process when adding new products to your skincare routine.

Active ingredients cause skin purging such as Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene, isotretinoin, retinyl palmitate); Hydroxy Acids (citric, hydroxycaproic, mandelic, salicylic, gluconolactone, glycolic, lactic, lactobionic, and tartaric) and Benzoyl Peroxide, as well as chemical peels, lasers and microdermabrasions. At Like It On Top we use citric acid in some of our products to aid skin renewal.

At Like It On Top, we suggest that you are very sparing with each product, as a little goes a long way. Just use small amounts whilst your skin adjusts to the products, but please trust the process as many customers will always experience a skin purge when adding new products to their skincare routine.
It takes about a month for your skin to completely purge. You should start to see progress in your complexion within 30 days. But remember, your spots begin deep below the surface of your skin and could take up to 8 weeks to surface. If you don't see improvement past that 8-week mark, you’ll need to re-evaluate your overall skincare routine. Everyone’s skin is unique, so the timeframe can differ from person to person.

How long does skin purging last?

Generally speaking, dermatologists say that skin purging should be over within four to six weeks of starting a new skin care regime. Although, if your skin purge lasts longer than six weeks, you should consider adjusting your skincare to find a routine that works for you.

What does skin purging look like?

Skin purging usually appears as tiny red bumps on the skin that might be painful to touch. They are often accompanied by whiteheads or blackheads, too. Skin purging can also cause your skin to become flaky. But the flare ups as a result of skin purging have a shorter lifespan than a breakout. Skin purging usually occurs in a defined area where you already have frequent breakouts. After the skin purging phase you can expect clearer, brighter, and smoother skin. Skin purging is a good sign and is just one step towards positive skin development. We recommend that you keep at it, persevere, and continue using Like It On Top to improve your skin.

How to achieve results?

We highly recommend using the 4-Step Kit or Acne Kit as part of an overall skincare routine in the morning and evening. Don’t forget that there is a build-up of sweat during the night on your skin and a build-up of dirt and make-up during the day on your skin – so you MUST remember to use the 4-Step Kit or Acne Kit in the morning and evening.

Follow the instructions

Please use each product as instructed. There’s no need to add more than directed as this will not speed up the skincare process for faster results. In fact, you may end up clogging your pores and that’s exactly what we are trying to avoid. Don’t forget to do a patch test on the skin before adding any new skincare products to your daily routine. You can do this by applying a small amount of product to a clear area of skin, such as the wrist and wait at least 24 hours before introducing the products to your daily skincare routine.

What do our customers say?

Rachel gave it 5 Stars and says: "First purging, then glowing: My experience did start with a panic as my skin purged for the first 10 days. Although I could see my hyperpigmentation disappearing my face was covered with something that looked like prickly heat. Having contacted them via Instagram they encouraged me to continue. I’m so glad I did. It has been about 18 days now and my skin is looking clear and glowy. Fortify is not my favourite as the petals can get stuck in the pump but I loveeeee Stroke - great face wash."

Aimee gave it 5 Stars and says: "Simply the best: Everything about this brand is amazing especially the service. I’ve been using sustain for maybe 2 weeks or just under and noticed a change in my skin straight away. It is lightweight and smells amazing. No chemicals makes a huge difference and after my skin purged a little it has been visibly glowing ever since. Trust the process guys!!!"
