Coping with adult or cystic acne due to mask wearing

As a result of mask wearing, we have seen an increase in the number of people asking about adult acne.

Despite the fact we are coming into contact with fewer pore-blocking pollutants due to being out of the house less, more people are suffering with adult acne this year.

This may be due to a number of factors such as falling out of their usual daily routines or more likely stress, which is a major cause of cystic acne. There is also the added issue of Maskne (also known as mask acne) and Vi-Brow, which is acne on the brow caused by wearing visors.

Adult acne and cystic acne are quite common, with some celebrities even speaking about their own concerns such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Alicia Keys, Kendall Jenner, Rihanna and Kristen Stewart.

We know that the sebum (oil) production in your skin is affected by the humid and warm environment created from increased mask wearing, which results in blocked pores on the skin.

Like It On Top skincare offers natural, vegan and fragrance free skin care products for all skin types, including dry skin, normal to combination skin, oily skin, acne prone skin, hyperpigmentation or mature skin. Some of our customers successfully use Like It On Top products to deal with maskne (mask acne), as you can see from the before and after images below. This particular customer has been using the 4-Step Kit to cleanse, double cleanse, tone and oil cleanse the skin in the morning and evening.

Here are our top tips for preventing “maskne” or "mask-acne", caused by face masks and visors.

1. Keep skin hydrated

Ensuring your skin is properly hydrated will definitely help to improve the barrier function of the skin. Non-alcohol or natural-based toners that help to soothe the skin, particularly containing rose water, can prevent your skin from drying out.

We recommend using the 4-Step Kit, which contains Fortify (toning protection) to aid the skin’s ability to hold water, or remain hydrated; critical for maintaining healthy skin. A lightweight and non-greasy face oil such as Sustain (oil cleansing protection) can also help with persistent dry skin patches.

2. Lip Moisture

Keeping lips moisturised as part of your skincare routine is extremely important to avoid chapped or cracked lips. Applying lip balm solely will not help to remedy this problem unless dead skin cells are removed first. We recommend using Juicy (lip scrub protection) to exfoliate, moisturise and hydrate lips before applying Drip (lip balm protection).

3. Skin Cleanse

We recommend using our 4-Step Kit to revitalise and cleanse the skin, as well as treat acne and prevent breakouts. Cleansing skin twice each day can assist with treating dryness, skin irritation and skin redness. Anti-inflammatory ingredients within the 4-Step Kit, such as turmeric and vitamin E, can help soothe irritated skin.
